17-4PH
17-4PH stainless steel (also known as Type 630) is a precipitation-hardening martensitic stainless steel that combines high strength, corrosion resistance, and excellent mechanical properties at temperatures up to 600°F (316°C). It is widely used in aerospace, chemical, and marine industries where strength and corrosion resistance are critical.
Key Features
- High Strength & Hardness: Achieves high mechanical strength through heat treatment.
- Corrosion Resistance: Comparable to 304 stainless steel in many environments.
- Machinability & Weldability: Good machinability in solution-annealed condition; weldable with proper techniques.
- Thermal Stability: Maintains strength and toughness up to 600°F (316°C).
Industries and Applications
17-4PH stainless steel is ideal for:
- Aerospace: Structural components, fasteners, landing gear
- Mechanical Engineering: Shafts, gears, valves
- Chemical Processing: Reactor vessels, pump parts
- Marine: Propeller shafts, offshore platforms
- Medical: Surgical instruments, orthopedic devices
Heat Treatment & Aging
- Supplied in solution-annealed condition (Condition A).
- Can be hardened by precipitation heat treatment to various conditions (H900 to H1150).
- Offers a balance between strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance depending on the chosen condition.
