Stainless Steel is a generic word including over 100 different types of alloys.
These alloys have one thing in common: thanks to their chromium content, they do not require surface protection to fight against the various types of corrosion. In fact, the chromium combined with the oxygen in the air and water creates a “passive layer” of oxide on the surface.
Stainless steels are divided into 5 main groups: austenitic, martensitic, ferritic, duplex and precipitation hardened. There are also families of stainless steels with specific characteristics: refractory heat-resistant steel, resistant to very high temperatures, and superaustenitic steels for extremely corrosive environments.
With chromium and nickel accounting for 15 to 26% and 5% to 25% respectively of their composition, stainless steels are generally non-temperable and non-magnetic.
